If you are looking for cosmetic dentistry, you should never shop based on price alone. (This includes expensive cosmetic dentists–expect to pay more for a quality cosmetic dentist, but don’t assume a dentist must be good because he charges a lot; do your homework!) There are many problems we see when helping people who tried to save money on cosmetic dentistry. Here are a few of the more common ones.
Cosmetic dentistry is, first and foremost, supposed to look good. If it doesn’t it’s a failure. Unfortunately, unattractive cosmetic dentistry is all too common. Some of the most common problems we see are:
Cosmetic dentistry should stand out in a good way. People should look at your teeth and think how beautiful they are. But they should think it’s your natural smile. If people can pick out your fake smile, you’ve gotten a bad result.
Many inexperienced or untalented cosmetic dentists focus so much on trying to get the look right that they forget that your teeth have to work properly, too. The most common problem is that your restorations don’t feel comfortable when you chew. Sometimes your teeth may not even feel comfortable while resting in your mouth.
In extreme cases, poor dental restorations can lead to TMJ.
If you do your part in taking care of them, porcelain veneers and other cosmetic restorations should last about ten years (give or take, about 90-95% last 10 years or more, with about 80-85% lasting 20 years, according to clinical studies). Poorly placed restorations will break much sooner.
Another problem with poorly designed cosmetic dentistry is that it may be too tall for your mouth. This means that they might come together unexpectedly when you talk, causing intermittent clicking. Sometimes you may not have this problem when talking at normal volume, but experience it when trying to address a room or sing. Other times, you may have difficulty forming certain sounds because your teeth aren’t shaped right.
If you are going to get cosmetic dentistry, it’s best to get it done right. This isn’t a pair of shoes that you can wear around the house or schlepping to the store, it’s part of your appearance, part of your personality, and an essential part of your identity. Don’t risk coming out with a terrible result that can be hard to reverse.
